Goliardo Tinto

15.75 €/un.

Goliardo Tinto is an impressive aged red wine encompassed in the regulatory board of the Rias Baixas Designation of Origin made by the Forjas del Salnés Winery. We are faced with a blend of the native grape varieties Caiño, Loureiro and Espadeiro together with a small percentage of Sousón. This is the wine that was formerly called Bastión de la Luna. With the change of name, the production has also been modified, seeking more finesse and elegance. This wine comes from old vines on pebble, sandy and granite soils. They are strains of autochthonous varieties of varying ages that go from 45 to 180 years. When the grapes are at their optimum ripeness, they are harvested manually. In the winery, Forjas del Salnés Tinto 2018 ferments it spontaneously with native yeasts in stainless steel tanks. The wine is then aged in 225 and 500 liter oak barrels and in 1,500 liter oak casks for 12 months.

Rodrigo Méndez’s project in the Salnés valley has been one of the main sources of inspiration in Rías Baixas since its creation in the mid-2000s. Rodrigo is the nephew of another notable albariño producer, Gerardo Méndez de Do Ferreiro, and the name that he chose for his project, Forjas del Salnés, honors the iron business of grandfather Francisco Méndez, a great passionate about the vineyard who planted numerous farms in the area not only with white varieties but also with native red grapes. Driven by the desire to produce red wines in a region of white wines, Rodrigo Méndez sought the help of Raúl Pérez, a key producer in Bierzo and other Galician regions, who encouraged him not to neglect the characteristic Albariños of Salnés. Raúl, in fact, makes his original Albariño Sketch at Forjas del Salnés, one of the first underwater aging carried out in Spain. Both also share a project in Ribeira Sacra, in the Chantada area, under the name Castro Candaz. In Forjas del Salnés they work with about 12 hectares of vineyards in the Salnés distributed between Meaño, Sanxenxo and Barro, some owned and others leased. One of the latter is a small rural estate located in Barro with 180-year-old vines of Albariño and Caíño tinto on granite soils from which the fantastic Finca Genoveva comes from. All the plots are vinified separately to evaluate their characteristics based on the soils, the altitude or the greater proximity to the sea. The total production is around 70,000 bottles in a score of different wines, although not all of them are made every year. The “rarity” in red wines is the Pinot noir As Covas that comes from a farm with sandy soils in Meaño and is sold outside of D.O. Arenas de Arra, an albariño made from old vines close to Montalvo beach, which Méndez defines as “very special”, will be released shortly to the market.
